Comprehensive Digital Evaluation of Endothelium
(ADCIS)
Cells inside the cornea keep the cornea functional while it is stored outside of a person.
It remains a mystery why 20-50% of cells that donor corneas provide do not survive after transplantation. To that end, Lions Gift of Sight researchers extensively test the latest advances in graft processing and delivery to ensure cells remain healthy from donor recovery to patient surgery. Combining trypan blue staining, high resolution digital imaging, and machine learning, we can now perform quantitative evaluation of endothelial cell viability after processing over the entire graft and detect where the highest density of live cells can be found in the cornea. This novel approach is termed Comprehensive Digital Evaluation (CDE). Currently the CDE technology is under testing in collaboration with two industry partners.
